Wedding Website Gets Weblog
Pixelwave Design has just finished adding a weblog to the wedding website Elegant Marriage
The website is owned and maintained by the journalist Gareth Powell. In much the same vein as the other sites Pixelwave Design have worked on for Gareth the addition of the weblog allows him to quickly and easily update his site with news stories and articles. The weblog allows him up to concentrate on the all important content of his website and frees him from the technicalities of publishing web pages.
Pixelwave Design is also currently working on minor updates to his other websites and working on some Search Engine Optimisation issues.
Hurricane Rita Information
Some Pixelwave Design client's websites are hosted on web-servers within a datacenter basedd in Houston, Texas. As I am sure you are aware, this area of the US is about to be affected by Hurricane Rita. Based on discussions with the datacenters, they do not expect any problems as a result of the hurricane within the area, however, measures they have taken are listed below.
- 36/48hrs of fuel is on site to power diesel generators)
- An additional backup generator has been installed
- A drainage canal is built beside the Datacenter to divert heavy rain fall
- Guaranteed contracts for additional fuel within 2hrs
I obviously hope that all these preparation will turn out to be unnecessary, but as an extra precaution I am recommending that clients make a back-up of their websites. This is especially important for those of you with dynamic database driven sites and features such as content management systems, online shops, forums etc where data is changed regularly. You should be making these back-ups routinely anyway.
I will, over the next few hours, be making back-ups myself of all databases stored on the Texas based servers and already have backups of the home directories.
Hopefully this will all come to nothing, but it is better to be safe than sorry.
If you have any questions or concerns regarding any of this, please don't hesitate to contact me.
cPanel Update on Web Hosting Accounts
On Wednesday evening cPanel will be updated on all servers to the latest stable version (10.8.0-STABLE_15), followed by an Apache/PHP rebuild and upgrade to PHP 4.4.0. Sites may be unavailable for a couple of minutes while this work is carried out.
If you experience any problems following this essential upgrade please contact me straight away.
Thanks.
Alan
Forces-of-Nature is a website very close to my heart. It was the first website that I ever built and since those early days, when admittedly it was a fairly poorly constructed website, it has grown in both size and quality. Originally intended as a personal site and a practice site for me as I taught myself the intricacies of website design it soon become popular and is now a lively, community driven website aimed at windsurfers, surfers, kitesurfers and participants of any sports driven by the 'Forces-of-Nature'.
As the site has grown I have used it to develop my skills as first a web-designer and then a web database programmer. It has also been the website that I have used for testing various new web-technologies and features on.
The website is still going strongly with new members joining all the time to use its lively forums, record their sessions in the sports diaries, read the various beach guides and generally be a part of the community. New features and sections are being added all the time and I have just finished revamping the home page to provide an at a glance overview of the latest additions to the various parts of the site in a 'portal' style presentation.
I'm pleased to announce that a new Pixelwave Designed wbsite has just gone live.
Brynarfor Hotel is a family run Hotel in the seaside town of New Quay on Cardigan Bay. Their new website designed, built and hosted by Pixelwave Design provides details on the rooms available, their restaurant and home made cooking as well as giving an insight into some of the activities and places of interest to visit in the local area
Brynarfor Hotel arrange weekend dolphin watching holidays in conjunction with the Whale and Dolphin Conservation Society 'Out of the Blue' whale-watching holidays. These weekends comprise shore and boat based dolphin and wildlife watching in Cardigan Bay. Boat trips are arranged for the entire hotel to enjoy 1, 2, 4 or 6 hour trips to meet our friends the dolphins. More details of these can be found on their new website.
As with all new Pixelwave Design websites the site is fully compliant with the latest web standards and is fully accessible.
Online Shopping Cart System
I'm please to report that I have just finished building an online shopping cart system for the Paleaontological Association.
Their new system integrates with their existing website and allows visitors to their site to order membership and memberhsip renewals online. They are also selling Palaeontological publications through the system and using it for registration for their annual conference.
The Palaeontological Association is based in the UK and is registered as a UK charity, but its members are drawn from all over the world. The interests of members of the Association encompass all aspects of palaeontology, including macropalaeontology, micropalaeontology, palaeobotany, vertebrate palaeontology, palaeoecology, and biostratigraphy. There are currently about 1000 professional, amateur and student members. Anyone with any sort of interest in fossils is welcome to join the Association, and there are no membership requirements other than the annual subscription.
The new online shopping cart system is up and running now and can be seen here.
