xHTML & CSS Template
So, what are my tasks for today? The main one is to continue changing an old-fashioned website using a tables based layout into a much sleeker, easier to manage xHTML and CSS based layout. The site was originally built by a client of mine who's strengths lie in the generation of informative journalistic content rather than the 'geeky' coding of a website. This has led to a rather cumbersome page that doesn't conform to web standards, has several accessibility issues and isn't particularly search engine friendly. It is also becoming a nightmare for him to update and maintain on a daily basis.
My task is to build a new template for my client that will result in the same aesthetic layout of the page, but will address the issues mentioned above. The use of CSS and xHTML will not only produce a more modern site that is fully accessible and conforms to the latest web standards, but it will also be much easier to maintain and will make my clients job of adding new content (which is his forte) a much more pleasurable experience.
In the long term, the use of the new template will make future changes to the layout on a site wide basis much easier, quicker and therefore cheaper. In addition, the content will be more accessible, not only to real human visitors, but also to the search engine robots whichin time should pay dividends for the websites ranking within search engine results pages (SERPS).
As well as building the template and the stylesheet I shall be tutoring my client on the principles behind the changes, so that he knows why I have made the changes and will be able to use these techniques in his future web projects.
